Recent research has proposed the clouded leopard branched from other members of the Pantherinae family first—over 6 million years ago—making them the most ancient feline species in the modern cat world. The zoo introduced their 1-month-old clouded leopard cub on Thursday morning. They are a separate species of wild cat, as are snow leopards and leopards. Virtually nothing is known of the social behavior of wild clouded leopards. The Zoo has been home to adult clouded leopards since 2006. For the first time, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo is home to rare clouded leopard cubs. At this point they will be ready to join the clouded leopard breeding program to help save the species. Although the Smithsonian’s National Zoo has exhibited this rare cat before, they were the first cubs to serve as (adorable) ambassadors for their species.

The clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) is a medium-size wild cat occurring from the Himalayan foothills through mainland Southeast Asia into southern China.Since 2008, it is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.Its total population is suspected to be fewer than 10,000 mature individuals, with a decreasing population trend, and no single population numbering more than 1,000 adults. The cubs are a male named Paitoon and a female named Jilian. The first clouded leopard cub ever produced from AI using cryopreserved semen was born in 2017 at the Nashville Zoo – another partnership with the SCBI.
