SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Effective July 1, 2018, two eastern panhandle counties will be added to three that already have restrictions on the disposal and transport of deer carcasses. The disease does not produce an immediate widespread die-off of deer but if allowed to spread will cause long-term damage to the herd. The results are expected in the next four weeks. Chronic Wasting Disease was first diagnosed in West Virginia in 2005, Virginia in 2009, Maryland in 2010, and Pennsylvania in 2012. In 2019, after the detection of CWD in Culpeper County and the subsequent need to create a second CWD response/management area in Virginia, the Department elected to utilize the term CWD Disease Management Area (DMA) instead of CWD Containment Area to delineate affected counties. The CWD sample total and samples by county reflect those collected from July 1, 2019 through today. As of 2016, prevalence rates of CWD among adult bucks – meaning the percentage of tested adult bucks that were positive for CWD – included 15 percent in Dane, 42 percent in Richland, 45 percent in Sauk, and as high as 51 percent in north central Iowa County. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) announced today that three more free-ranging white-tailed deer in Hampshire County, West Virginia, tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). During 2019, due to the detection of CWD, in both captive and free-ranging deer, DMAs 2 and 3 have been expanded, while no changes have been made to DMA 4.
