Over the following eighteen months, Warbeck received Scottish support, culminating in an invasion, led by James and Warbeck in late summer of 1496. Perkin Warbeck (c. 1474 – 23 November 1499) was a pretender to the English throne. He had somehow acquired some grace and manners and became a merchant’s assistant, traveling around Europe. Perkin Warbeck’s father, Jehan de Werbecque, was a poor burgess from Tournai in France. To show his support for the Pretender, James IV offered Warbeck the hand in marriage of Lady Catherine Gordon, the beautiful, rich daughter of a Scottish nobleman. He was also fitted with lavish clothes and entertained like a king.
As a boy he served as a servant in a number of households. 1496 (during) James IV of Scotland gave Warbeck the hand in marriage of Lady Catherine Gordon. Warbeck’s army attempted to land in England on 3 July 1495… Supported by 1,500 men – many of whom were battle-hardened continental mercenaries – Warbeck had chosen to land his army at the port town of Deal in Kent.
Whilst the rebellion was a curious affair it did … 1497 (late May) The people of Cornwall rebelled against the tax for the defence of the Scottish border. …but they were met with fierce opposition.
4. Warbeck was born around 1474. The Warbeck Rebellion was Henry VII’s second rebellion to deal with after the Lambert Simnel Rebellion of 1486-87. Perkin Warbeck was the son of a French boatman or official in Tournai (now a part of Belgium). The Scottish king was James IV (b.1473) who reigned 1488-1513, after seizing the throne from his father.
In 1491 Warbeck was working for a Breton silk merchant called Pierre Jean Meno. First, his identity as the true Duke would validate his original testimony, made before his capture, that his brother was, in fact, murdered--not sent to a safer location or dead of natural causes. Perkin Warbeck to James IV of Scotland, according to Francis Bacon in his biography Henry VII (1638) ‘Richard’ was well received in Scotland, and proceeded to exploit the natural antipathy between the Scottish and the English to mount a strategy for Henry’s overthrow. The Scottish King agreed to back his claim and gave him a yearly pension of £1200.
Warbeck claimed to be Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, who was the second son of Edward IV and one of the so-called "Princes in the Tower". Which of course he claimed as Richard IV, younger son of Edward IV. Perkin Warbeck landed in Scotland at the end of November and was given a state welcome by King James IV.
In November 1495, the Pretender (from the french for ‘claimant’) Perkin Warbeck arrived at the Scottish court, looking for allies in his attempt to win the English throne. 1496 (24th February) Magnus Intercursus This treaty between England and the Netherlands provided for a renewal of trade between the two countries. The rebellion led by Perkin Warbeck was a long drawn out affair and lasted between 1491 and 1499.
Lady Catherine Gordon (c. 1474 –October 1537) was a Scottish noblewoman and the wife of Yorkist pretender Perkin Warbeck, who claimed he was Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York.After her imprisonment by King Henry VII of England, she became a favoured lady-in-waiting of his wife, Elizabeth of York.She had a total of four husbands, but there are no records she had any surviving children.
Warbeck, appalled by the reality of war, left after a day's campaigning, but James pressed on. This Scottish invasion forces Henry to raise the tax which was the cause of the Cornish Rebellion; Warbeck fails twice in his attempts to capture the English castle at Waterford in Ireland – total of 11 days of siege. Allowing that Perkin Warbeck really was the Duke of York opens the door to some interesting consequences. 5. Perkin Warbeck, who was supported by James IV. His aim was the re-capture of Berwick. Parliament approved a new tax to raise money to defend the border with Scotland against a further invasion in support of Perkin Warbeck.
Warbeck arrived in Cork in the autumn of 1491 on one of Meno’s merchant ships selling silk.
